Allegiant Air Contracts for Additional Aircraft; MD-83s Will Be Used for Charter Operations and Scheduled Services.

Allegiant Air Allegiant Air is an American low fare airline, owned by Allegiant Travel Co. (NASDAQ: ALGT), headquartered in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The airline operates scheduled and charter flights from focus cities at Las Vegas' McCarran International Airport, Orlando Sanford  today announced that it has contracted to acquire two additional MD-83 jet aircraft to serve the airline's growing charter and scheduled service business.

Allegiant said the 164-seat aircraft are scheduled for delivery to the carrier in February and March of 2003, and will be available for service within a few weeks of delivery. The additional aircraft will increase the Allegiant fleet to five jet aircraft, including three MD-83s and two MD-87s.

"The MD-83 was selected for Allegiant Air based on its operating characteristics, reliability and suitability for our charter and scheduled airline operations," said Maurice J. Gallagher, the airline's chairman. "The MD-83 provides the necessary range, passenger capacity and overall operating efficiency the Company needs to further expand our charter and scheduled operations."

The MD-83 is a Stage III aircraft meeting reduced noise emission standards Emission standards are requirements that set specific limits to the amount of pollutants that can be released into the environment. Many emission standards focus on regulating pollutants released by automobiles (motor cars) and other powered vehicles but they can also regulate  for take-off and landing.
