CT generating facility employees formally received their VPP Star certification during a ceremony earlier today. As a part of this ceremony, OSHA representatives presented a flag to the employees that officially designates the CT sites as VPP Star facilities.

"CT generating facility employees have joined the ranks of a growing list of Allegheny Energy Supply employees who are committed to a higher level of safety excellence through the VPP Star Program," said James P. Garlick, Vice President of Supply Operations for Allegheny Energy Supply. "The CT sites play an important role in Allegheny's overall generation mix, providing peaking power during times of heavy electrical demand by our customers. The safe operation of these facilities helps to ensure that they are ready to come online when we need them. I congratulate the employees who operate and maintain the CT sites for making safety a priority, and, consequently, for receiving this prestigious award."

The three generating facilities honored today include Allegheny Energy (AE) Units 1 & 2, located in Springdale, Pa.; AE Units 8 & 9, located in Gans, Pa.; and AE Units 12 & 13, located in Chambersburg, Pa. All three facilities are natural gas-fired and are capable of producing 88-megawatts each. Because of their quick start-up time, the units are used primarily during times of peak electrical demand.

The five employees responsible for the safe operation and maintenance of the CT generating facilities, with the support of Allegheny Energy Supply's Safety, Health & Training Team, worked for more than a year to be considered for this exclusive award that has only been achieved by less than one percent of the more than 7 million worksites that OSHA monitors nationwide. The evaluation process is very rigorous and includes an on-site review by a team of OSHA representatives.

"Achieving VPP Star Status took a coordinated effort among management, employees and OSHA, and CT site employees should be proud of what they have accomplished," said John C. David, Combustion Turbine Manager, LM6000 Sites. "We will strive to maintain the high standards that we have been honored for today, and we will continue to work with OSHA to find new ways to protect our employees and make sure they go home safely to their families every day."
