Allegheny Energy CEO Elected to EPRI Board of Directors.

HAGERSTOWN, Md.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 11, 2001

Allegheny Energy, Inc. (NYSE: AYE) today announced that Alan J. Noia, Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer, has been elected to serve on the Electric Power Research Institute's (EPRI) Board of Directors for a four-year term, beginning this month.

Mr. Noia's career with Allegheny Energy and experience in the electric power industry spans 35 years. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering, he joined the Company as an engineer. He has held a wide variety of positions with Allegheny Energy, including Vice President of Bulk Power Supply, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. Mr. Noia was named Chief Executive Officer in 1996 and Chairman of the Board in 1997.

He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Edison Electric Institute, Southeastern Electric Exchange (where he is President), Ohio Valley Electric Corporation, Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and the Board of Trustees of the Community Foundation of Washington County, Md. Mr. Noia also serves on the Corporate Council of The Conservation Fund.
