Allaire Announces Partnership with Unwired Planet to Deliver Web Applications to Wireless Internet Devices; Allaire's Cold Fusion Web Application Development Tool will Support Unwired Planet's UP.Link Software Platform for Wireless Web Devices such as AT&T's PocketNet Cellular Phone.

SAN MATEO San Mateo (săn mətā`ō), city (1990 pop. 85,486), San Mateo co., W Calif., on San Francisco Bay; inc. 1894. It is a commercial and retail center with some high-technology manufacturing. San Mateo, Spanish for St. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 4, 1996--Allaire Corp. today announced that Cold Fusion cold fusion or low-temperature fusion, nuclear fusion of deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen, at or relatively near room temperature. Fusion, the reaction involved in the release of the destructive energy of a hydrogen bomb, requires extremely  Professional 2.0, Allaire's leading Web application development tool, will now support Unwired Planet's platform for delivering interactive content to wireless Internet devices including cellular phones and pagers.

As a result of this partnership Web developers can use Cold Fusion to easily create Internet and Intranet applications for Unwired Planet's UP.Browser, a micro-browser and messaging engine embedded in wireless devices such as AT&T's PocketNet Phone.

Combining the Web application development functionality provided by Cold Fusion with Unwired Planet's UP.Link wireless software platform and AT&T's "wireless IP" also known as Cellular Digital Packet Data (communications, protocol) Cellular Digital Packet Data - (CDPD) A wireless standard providing two-way, 19.2 kbps packet data transmission over exisiting cellular telephone channels.  (CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) A low-speed, digital, wireless data network that is an enhancement to an existing analog cellular network. Based on IBM's CelluPlan II, CDPD provides a packet overlay onto the AMPS network and moves data at 19. ) service, and next-generation cellular phones, offers a complete solution for corporations that want to create interactive Internet and Intranet applications that extend to wireless handheld devices.

Applications developed with the technology can service a wide range of remote application needs such as customer directories, real-time pricing, product ordering, fax and e-mail messaging on demand, project management and workgroup collaboration.

"The unique opportunity of the Internet as a platform is that Web applications can run in a browser on any device," said Jeremy Allaire In 1995 Jeremy D. Allaire co-founded Allaire Corporation with his brother JJ Allaire, creating the web development tool Cold Fusion. When Macromedia acquired Allaire in March 2001, Jeremy became Chief Technology Officer. , director of technology strategy at Allaire Corp. "Unwired Planet and AT&T have made this opportunity a reality by putting the browser into your pocket on your phone or pager. By integrating Cold Fusion with this technology we are giving existing Web developers the tools to extend database-driven Web applications to this new generation of Internet devices."

Wireless Internet devices represent the next wave of growth for the Web. The technology to seamlessly deploy applications across multiple client platforms, including devices such as cellular phones and pagers, is creating major new opportunities for both small and large corporations.

"Because AT&T PocketNet Phone applications and services operate on off-the-shelf Web servers and are compatible with existing Web applications, we have seen tremendous interest in our PocketNet initiative," said Kent Hellebust, director of product management for AT&T PocketNet Service with AT&T Wireless Services, Wireless Data Division.

"We are pleased that a leading Web application development tool vendor like Allaire is providing customers with the tools they need to build applications for the next generation of Internet devices like the PocketNet Phone."

How the Technology Works

Cold Fusion is an innovative application development tool designed to meet the unique needs of Web developers. Cold Fusion gives developers a way to quickly build sophisticated Web applications that integrate with key server technologies such as relational databases and SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet and part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, as defined by IETF RFC 2821. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail.  e-mail. It offers a powerful application server, a complete application framework, and the Cold Fusion Markup Language markup language

Standard text-encoding system consisting of a set of symbols inserted in a text document to control its structure, formatting, or the relationship among its parts. The most widely used markup languages are SGML, HTML, and XML.

Unwired Planet's UP.Link platform is a groundbreaking open software platform for wireless devices. The UP.Link platform includes a server, micro-browser, and the Handheld Device Markup Language The Handheld Device Markup Language (HDML) is a markup language intended for display on handheld computers, information appliances, smartphones, etc.. It is similar to HTML, but for wireless and handheld devices with small displays, like PDA, mobile phones and so on.  (HDML (Handheld Device Markup Language) A specialized version of HTML designed to enable wireless pagers, cellphones and other handheld devices to obtain information from Web pages. HDML was developed by Phone. ), a markup language optimized for interactive Web access from wireless handheld devices. UP-enabled cellular phones, such as the AT&T PocketNet Phone, transmit information via the AT&T wireless IP network.

CFML and HDML integrate seamlessly, giving developers the best environment to create sophisticated database-driven applications for wireless Internet devices. Because Cold Fusion can automatically detect the browser type, Web developers can build applications that work with both traditional Web browsers The following is a list of web browsers. Historical

"We based the UP.Link development environment on a markup language (HDML) because of both the incredible success of HTML HTML

and the opportunity to leverage the existing network model," said Andrew Laursen, vice president of engineering at Unwired Planet. "CFML, Cold Fusion's server-side markup language, provides a natural and powerful way to create applications for HTML desktops and HDML mobile devices with a common tool."

Pricing and Availability

Integration with Unwired Planet's HDML and the UP.Link platform is supported by the current version of Cold Fusion Professional 2.0.

A full software development kit will be available from Allaire in January 1997. Cold Fusion 2.0 is currently available from Allaire for $495 or $595 with an annual software subscription. Product information, a free 30-day evaluation version, a list of sites using Cold Fusion, and a wide array of developer resources can be found at the Allaire Web site: www.allaire.com. Cold Fusion can be ordered directly from Allaire at 888/939-2545.

Cold Fusion is based on industry standards and protocols. It runs on Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  and Windows 95 servers and works with every major Web server and all ODBC-compliant databases such as Microsoft SQL Server A relational DBMS from Microsoft that is a major component of the Windows Server System. It is Microsoft's high-end client/server database and is closely integrated with Microsoft Visual Studio and the Microsoft Office System. , Oracle, Access and Paradox.
