All-servo spin welder for complicated joining.

What's said to be the first spin welder to operate entirely with servo An electromechanical device that uses feedback to provide precise starts and stops for such functions as the motors on a tape drive or the moving of an access arm on a disk.  motors rather than air cylinders air cylinder can mean:-
  • a gas cylinder used to store compressed air.
  • pneumatic cylinder, a mechanical device used to impart a force from a fluid.
has been introduced by Plastic Assembly Systems in Milford, Conn. The SW750 two-axis spin welder uses servo motors to replace both the air cylinder for vertical head adjustment and the air spinning motor or air veil. Dual-servo design is said to improve welding welding, process for joining separate pieces of metal in a continuous metallic bond. Cold-pressure welding is accomplished by the application of high pressure at room temperature; forge welding (forging) is done by means of hammering, with the addition of heat.  precision by controlling travel distance within 0.001 in. and part placement angles within 1 [degrees]. Targets are medical and appliance parts with complicated weld joints.

The unit also eliminates mechanical setting of stop points and reduces set-up times. Head design is modified to eliminate the need to load parts into the upper tool. The $10,000 higher cost of the SW750 is said to be offset by elimination of compressed air compressed air, air whose volume has been decreased by the application of pressure. Air is compressed by various devices, including the simple hand pump and the reciprocating, rotary, centrifugal, and axial-flow compressors.  costs. Pay-back is estimated at about two years.
