All-male cast kick off Cardiff Festival.


A ROMANTIC comedy is the order of the day for the first event of this year's Cardiff Festival.

The Lord Chamberlain's Men The Lord Chamberlain's Men was the playing company that William Shakespeare worked for as actor and playwright for most of his career. Formed at the end of a period of flux in the theatrical world of London, it had become, by 1603, one of the two leading companies of the  will be performing Shakespeare's Twelfth Night Twelfth Night, Jan. 5, the vigil or eve of Epiphany, so called because it is the 12th night from Christmas, counting Christmas as the first. In England, Twelfth Night has been a great festival marking the end of the Christmas season, and popular masquerading parties  as it was in his time, with an all-male cast, during the Cardiff Castle Open Air Theatre, on Thursday and Friday.

Cardiff Festival starts on Thursday and runs all the way through to the August Bank Holiday on August 31, featuring 16 events over 53 days, including annual favourites such as Admiral Cardiff Big Weekend, the Welsh Proms Cardiff, Cardiff International Food & Drink Festival and WOW on the Waterfront, along with newcomers for this year, Horrid Henry.

Currently on a UK tour, the Lord Chamberlain's Men is Britain's premier all male theatre company, and a modern version of Shakespeare's original troop of the same name.

Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Councillor Nigel Howells, said: "In the magical setting of Cardiff Castle, this is a great evening's entertainment and a fitting way to launch this summer's Cardiff Festival."
