All-Electric Machines Have Direct Clamping. At the recent IPF (Itanium Processor Family) See Itanium. '99 show in Tokyo, Nissei Plastic Industrial Co. introduced two all-electric machines with a pair of intriguing in·trigue n. 1. a. A secret or underhand scheme; a plot. b. The practice of or involvement in such schemes. 2. A clandestine love affair. v. features. Unlike most electric-driven machines, the new 20-ton ED200/TM and 170-ton ED3000 do not have toggles. Instead, they have a proprietary direct-clamping mechanism that employs ball screws A ball screw is a mechanical device for translating rotational motion to linear motion. A threaded shaft provides a spiral raceway for ball bearings which act as a precision screw. (two of them on ED3000). This is said to give better clamp-pressure control, comparable to a hydraulic machine hydraulic machine, machine that derives its power from the motion or pressure of water or some other liquid. Hydraulic Engines Water falling from one level to a lower one is used to drive machines like the water wheel and the turbine. . Also new on these machines is the use of a beltless direct drive, in which the ball-screw is integrated with the motor shaft. (At present, Sumitomo, is the only other machine maker using beltless direct electric drive.) The beltless drive is said to be cleaner and quieter and to provide faster response and require less maintenance. |
