While anyone can attend this and similar events, there are also wider benefits to be had from becoming a member of one of the many family history societies. Run mainly by enthusiastic volunteers, these societies are run on slick, professional lines, as can be seen by the quality of their websites, their workshops, library stocks and publications. Many societies provide search services; lists of members' interests, mailing lists, online databases and links to similar groups and other genealogical sites. Most areas are covered by one of these societies - for example I have ancestors in Kent and both the Kent FHS and North West Kent FHS have led me to discover information that would previously have been virtually unobtainable for someone living such a distance away from the county record office and other local archives. The umbrella group for the majority of these local societies is the Federation of Family History Societies. The Federation is an educational charity which exists to represent, advise and support its member family history societies and other genealogical organisations world-wide. The Federation states that its principal aims are: 'to co-ordinate and assist the work of societies or other bodies interested in family history, genealogy and heraldry heraldry, system in which inherited symbols, or devices, called charges are displayed on a shield, or escutcheon, for the purpose of identifying individuals or families. ; to foster mutual co-operation and collaborative projects to help researchers; and to represent the interests of our members, and family historians generally, especially in the preservation and availability of archival documents.' The Federation makes representations to official bodies on matters affecting the study of family history and related topics as well as regular liaising with government and historical organisations. It organises courses on family history around the world and provides lists of speakers on family history, heraldry and associated topics for member societies. Go along to St George's Hall today to see the work your local FHS does in providing solid support for your researches. It is well worth becoming a member - you never know what you might discover!
