All quiet on the Ramirez front; Manny doesn't talk to media.

COLUMN: RED SOX NOTES

BOSTON - While controversy swirled on the talk shows about Manny Manny may refer to:

 before last night's game.

Ramirez made a statement once the game started, however, knocking in three of Boston's five runs with a two-run single in the fourth and his 20th home run, a solo shot, in the ninth. He was 2 for 5 on the night, also hitting the ball hard when he bounced into an inning-ending double play in the seventh.

Manny didn't speak before or after the game, as he did the day before when he said he was sick of the Red Sox and they were sick of him, and that he would be agreeable to a trade.

There were reports in various media that the Phillies would be a good landing spot for the controversial slugger since Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel Charles Fuqua Manuel (born January 4, 1944 in Northfork, WV) is the current manager of the Philadelphia Phillies of Major League Baseball.  was his former hitting instructor and manager with the Indians, and has maintained an excellent relationship with Ramirez.

But with the trading deadline of 4 p.m. Thursday approaching, there was nothing concrete about moving Ramirez, and it's probably unlikely there will be. Despite his antics, his departure would leave a big gap in the middle of Boston's lineup. The Red Sox also hold club options on him the next two seasons and aren't likely to dump him without getting substantial value in return.

However, no one expected Sox GM Theo Epstein Theo Nathan Epstein (born December 29, 1973 in New York City) is the Executive Vice President/General Manager of the Boston Red Sox. In November 2002, the Red Sox made him the youngest GM in the history of Major League Baseball by hiring him at the age of 28.  to trade Nomar Garciaparra Anthony Nomar Garciaparra[1] (born July 23, 1973, in Whittier, California) is a Mexican-American baseball player who currently plays third base for the Los Angeles Dodgers.  in that midseason blockbuster in 2004, so the situation bears watching.

Ramirez, who had a pair of doubles in Sunday night's 9-2 victory over the Yankees and didn't look like his knees were bothering him when he ran through third-base coach DeMarlo Hale's stop sign to score in that game, batted in his usual cleanup slot last night.

Colon close to return

Bartolo Colon threw a side session yesterday and manager Terry Francona
Terry Jon Francona (born April 22 1959, in Aberdeen, South Dakota), nicknamed "Tito," is a Major League Baseball manager. As of 2007, he manages the Boston Red Sox in the American League.
said the right-hander may be a week away from pitching in a game.

Colon has been on the DL since June 17 with a lower back strain and missed time previously this season with an oblique strain

"We'll wait until (today) to see how his arm responds, but the ball was coming out of his hand good, he's getting there," Francona said. "We're trying to keep him on a pace where he doesn't have setbacks, like he did with the side and other issues. He's certainly shown us what he can do when he's healthy."

Colon is 4-2 with a 4.09 ERA in six starts and really gave Boston's rotation a boost when it was needed in May and June.

    Ellsbury snaps out of slump

Jacoby Ellsbury Jacoby McCabe Ellsbury (born September 11, 1983, in Madras, Oregon) is a Major League Baseball player who is currently the top rated prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization[1] and rated as the # 33 prospect for 2007 by Baseball America.  broke out of a long slump with three hits Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists. , including a double that was his first extra-base hit ex·tra-base hit

Francona said that getting thrown out on the bases recently probably affected Ellsbury's confidence, but also noted that the Red Sox have been trailing in a lot of games recently, and he's not a big fan of running without a lead.

    Pedroia comfortable in new role

"I don't think he cares where he hits," Francona said of Dustin Pedroia, who went 2 for 4 Sunday night after going 0 for 4 Saturday in his first two games batting leadoff in Francona's new lineup shuffle with David Ortiz back in his DH slot.

Pedroia, though, went 0 for 5 last night in his third straight game batting leadoff.

Francona said he never tells a hitter how to hit - be more patient, for example - in different spots in the order. "They are what they are. I just tell them to be the hitter you are."

    Diamond Dust

David Ortiz, who went 2 for 4 last night, has posted multiple hits in each of his last three games. He is 7 for 16 (.438) with a home run and four RBIs since coming off the DL July 25. ... Brandon Moss had a pair of homers for Triple-A Pawtucket in an 8-5 win Sunday at Toledo. ... Jon Lester has a 2.05 ERA in July, third in the AL for the month.
