The jumping world, and that in Lambourn in particular, is shattered by the death in a car crash of Paul Croucher. The 27-year-old rider was making an increasing mark on the game and had just enjoyed the best season of his career with 51 winners.
His biggest wins were on Aquilifer in the Ritz Club Chase and Positive in the Scottish Champion Hurdle.
Tony Ives, who has been troubled by a rib injury since the beginning of the month, resumes with a winner when Vitality (Ian Balding) beats Moviegoer (Luca Cumani/Ray Cochrane) in the maiden fillies' race at Newbury, but immediately cries off again.
Peter Savill enjoys his 14th winner in the month during which he has been in the country when Time to Go Home (Reg Hollinshead/Tony Culhane, 3) beats Rad Rosein (Nigel/Kim Tinkler) in the first two-year-old race at Haydock. Savill is to return to his Cayman Islands base on Monday.
