Give the Detroit Regional Chamber some credit for jump-starting what could be the best hope left for improving mass transit mass transit, public transportation systems designed to move large numbers of passengers. Types and Advantages

Mass transit refers to municipal or regional public shared transportation, such as buses, streetcars, and ferries, open to all on a

"The (Detroit Regional Chamber) has been flogging the idea avidly for months, culminating in an all-out propaganda blitz at its annual Mackinac conference ... that succeeded in producing a rather meaningless agreement." The Detroit News, June 20, 2001.

The dialogue has begun. The above quotes are clearly representative of our community at large: some like the idea, some don't. Some are willing to take a new route, so to speak, to improve our transit system. Others are naysayers who hear the same old, same old - perfectly understandable after 20 years in the making.

What's the Chamber's take on all this? We believe that passage of the Detroit Regional Transit Authority Regional Transit Authority may refer to:

victory for everybody. It's the critical first step. Next we will work to design a unified system and develop the funding. Neither is an easy task. If our region wants an enhanced transit choice system - and I strongly believe we do - we have to pay for it.

The agreement announced at our Leadership Policy Conference was one of our program years greatest successes, but there are some others I'd like to share.

Membership: We've nearly hit the 15,000 mark, well on our way to becoming the largest chamber of commerce in the country. Our stellar Member Sales Team brought in a record $550,000 in member sales.

Public Policy: Regional transit isn't the only initiative. Regional Detroit as a transportation hub Transportation hub is a location where traffic is exchanged across several modes of transport. These modes may include any of railway, tramway, rapid transit, bus, automobile, truck, airplane, spacecraft, ship, ferry, pedestrian or any other kind of transportation.  is another. We're working to see that this region is a leader in our intermodal infrastructure and our ability to move people and goods as efficiently as possible. Also, more than 140 volunteer leaders in or associated with the health-care industry came together to develop a series of strategic initiatives that will ensure quality, competitiveness, cost-efficiency and the continued success of our health-care providers.

There are more items on our brag list, but a great deal of time, focus and energy will now go into the successful implementation of these important initiatives. The Chamber will proudly take "some credit" for moving the region forward and hope we can get others to join us for the ride.
