It is expected to be operational by 2004. "Cartagena has close to a million residents, of whom 90% use public transportation," says Laureano Perez, director of publication transportation for the city. The federal government will cover 70% of the costs and Cartegena will pay the difference, Perez says. The new system will be modeled after the TransMilenio The TransMilenio is a bus rapid transit system that serves Bogotá, Colombia. As of June 2007, the TransMilenio runs throughout the whole city, covering Av. Caracas, Calle 80, Autopista Norte, Av. Jiménez, NQS ("Norte Quito Sur"), Calle 13, Av. de las Américas, and Av.
