The Food for Life partnership brings together a range of different organisations including Garden Organic, The Soil Association, Focus on Food and the Health Education Trust and is National Lottery lottery, scheme for distributing prizes by lot or other method of chance selection to persons who have paid for the opportunity to win. The term is not applicable when lots are drawn without payment by the interested parties to determine some matter, e.g.  funded. Their role is to support work already being done in primary, secondary and special schools.

"These different organisations have the expertise to show schools how to develop their teaching in these areas," says Siobhan. "We are also aiming to help schools to reach out into the larger community." The campaign works with around 2,500 teachers to train them in leading cookery sessions as well as holding sessions with more than 40,000 children and adults.

Key areas are cooking skills, healthy eating, food safety and hygiene hygiene, science of preserving and promoting the health of both the individual and the community. It has many aspects: personal hygiene (proper living habits, cleanliness of body and clothing, healthful diet, a balanced regimen of rest and exercise); domestic hygiene , sources of food and eating together. By running its bronze, silver and gold marks, it gives schools a structured way of measuring their achievements in these areas.

And it works with key schools in each area, without any cost to the school.

"Schools had to apply and we support 20 schools in the West Midlands The following is a partial list of currently operating schools in the West Midlands region of England. "We are working to support their development of cooking in the curriculum, to establish cookery clubs to hold food themed events and to develop cooking in the community.

''We have five buses dedicated to the Food for Life partnership and take those buses around the flagship schools." And while it is a nationwide scheme, it comes down to individuals.

"All the children receive a pack containing the recipes for the foods they have made so they are then able to take them home and try them at home." says Siobhan. "They will have cooked each meal from scratch so are learning all about ingredients as well as the skills of cooking.

"Because of healthy eating we ensure everything is full of lots of different fruits and vegetables so they are learning the importance of fresh ingredients.

"And it is also fun. We have a great response from the children who enjoy doing something practical and seeing, and eating, the results." For more information see the www.focusonfood. * org See .org.
