All aboard the Brownie Express.


HUNDREDS of Merseyside Girl Guides and Brownies celebrated their centenary aboard a special steam train.

 Girlguiding Centenary Express was organised by the Liverpool Daily Post The Liverpool Daily Post is a newspaper published by Trinity Mirror on Merseyside in England. It is published Monday to Saturday and is published in Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Wales editions, and is the morning paper.  & Echo.

They were the only Girlguiding Division in the country to mark its 100th anniversary on a steam train.

The Brownies and Guides wanted to take a trip on the LDPE's summer steam trains from Liverpool, but these ended before the centenary weekend.

Instead, a special train was arranged for the 18 units of 326 Rainbows, Brownies, Girl Guidies, leaders and Trefoil trefoil (trē`foil) [O.Fr.,=three-leaf], in botany, name for several plants, chiefly of the pulse family, having trifoliate leaves. Best known of the trefoils is clover.  Group ex-guiders.

They were "flagged off" by the Mayor of St Helens, Cllr Terry Sheilds, from St Helens Junction to York and back.

 Guardsman steam locomotive was renamed The Girl Guide for the trip.

It was also the first time this 1927-built locomotive, which starred in the film Night Mail, had visited Liverpool since 1965.

Joanne Griffiths, St Helens Girlguiding divisional commissioner, said: "My heart nearly stopped in excitement when I saw the train arrive from Liverpool.

"It looked fantastic with our name on the front. Everyone was so excited and we had a fantastic day out."

During the journey, the youngsters worked on their Centenary Time Travel Challenge project.

And Joanne added: "This is a great memory-maker. Already, they're all asking me where we're going to be going next year on the steam train."
