Warren, America's first Poet Laureate poet laureate (lô`rēĭt), title conferred in Britain by the monarch on a poet whose duty it is to write commemorative odes and verse. , creates a fictional world, operatic in the grandeur of its dramatic and emotional force, based on the larger-than-life populist Louisiana governor of the 1930s, Huey Long Huey Pierce Long, Jr. (August 30, 1893 – September 10, 1935), nicknamed The Kingfish, was an American politician from the U.S. state of Louisiana. A Democrat, he was noted for his radical populist policies. , in this Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. With beautifully rhythmic and evocative language, Warren traces the transformation of poor, idealistic country farmer-lawyer Willie Stark Willie Stark is an opera in three acts and nine scenes by Carlisle Floyd to his own libretto, after the novel All the King's Men by Robert Penn Warren, which in turn was inspired by the life of the Louisiana governor Huey Long.  into The Boss, dirty wheeling-dealing governor. Told through the eyes, mind and heart of Jack Burden, witness to all, this compelling and deeply thoughtful work builds its dramatic force by delving into the moral underpinnings of the story, exploring the complexities of love, friendship, loyalty, truth, honor and integrity. Emerson's voiced reading is excellent. He is especially adept at expressing the intelligence and emotional range of Jack, from dry irony to wistful longing. Wonderfully satisfying and highly recommended. Jacqueline Edwards, Bedford, MA
