of why these stocks are in the All Star Analysts Portfolio:

Capital One Financial Corporation (NYSE:COF) remains one of the All Stars' favorite names in the financials industry. In late July, the company posted a solid second quarter performance as earnings per share of $2.03 topped the consensus by almost 17%. In the year-ago quarter, Capital One posted profits of $1.65. The company reported that managed loans were $83 billion, an improvement of 7% and 13% on a sequential and year-over-year basis respectively. The company still expects managed loans to grow at a rate between 12% and 15% during 2005. Capital One Financial said it remains on track to deliver earnings per share between $6.60-$7.00 in 2005, and expects the Hibernia acquisition to close on September 1, 2005.

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) reiterated its 2005 financial goals earlier this month of diluted earnings per share diluted earnings per share

EMC also expects to buy back more shares in the second half of 2005 than the first half. In fact, since its second quarter report on July 21 through its annual analyst day , EMC purchased 11.2 million shares of its stock for approximately $157 million.

During the second quarter, the company generated earnings per share of 12 cents on total consolidated revenue of $2.34 billion. The earnings result matched the consensus and topped last year's eight cents, while revenue jumped 19%. EMC said the quarter's growth was driven by its market-leading mid-tier storage systems, increasingly popular virtual infrastructure software from its VMware subsidiary, and an expanding services business.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE:HOT) reported in late July that it gained market share for the 11th straight quarter. For the second quarter, earnings per share from continuing operations continuing operations

Starwood stated that its progress in brand-building efforts and services innovation will continue to keep the company ahead of its competition while accelerating its market share growth. With business remaining robust, Starwood felt comfortable enough to raise its guidance for the remainder of the year. The hotels industry continues to rise after a long malaise malaise /mal·aise/ (mal-az´) a vague feeling of discomfort.

, and several All Stars believe Starwood is in a good position to capitalize.

Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) is a favorite of All Stars among financials. The company called its second quarter report another exceptional quarter of broad-based growth across its more than 80 businesses with continued double-digit growth in profit and earnings per share. In July, Wells Fargo posted earnings per share of $1.12 on revenue of $7.9 billion. The result improved 12% from last year's total of $1 while revenue improved 6% year-over-year. Revenues for Home Mortgage declined from the year earlier, but combined revenue of the other businesses improved 16%.
