of why these stocks are on the All Star Analysts Portfolio:

The Black & Decker Corporation (NYSE:BDK) is a leading global manufacturer and marketer of power tools and accessories, hardware and home improvement products, and technology-based fastening systems. Last month BDK announced that net earnings for the second quarter of 2003 were $75.7 million or 97 cents per diluted share, a +20% increase over diluted earnings per share diluted earnings per share

of 81 cents in the second quarter of 2002. The company continued to improve gross margins significantly in all business segments through their restructuring program and productivity gains. The benefits of good free cash flow, in the form of lower interest expense and a lower share count, means the company expects diluted earnings per share in the $1.00-to-$1.05 range for the third quarter. Although a slight improvement, several top All Star analysts believe that the company has turned the corner and is an effective tool in building a profitable portfolio.

Masco Corporation (NYSE:MAS) is one of the world's leading manufacturers of home improvement and building products as well as a leading provider of services that include the installation of insulation and other building products. In early August MAS reported that net sales Net Sales

for the second quarter ended June 30, 2003, aided by acquisitions, increased +20% to a record $2.8 billion, compared with $2.3 billion for the second quarter of 2002. Net income for the quarter increased 7% to a record $229.6 million compared with $214.3 million for the 2002 second quarter. Earnings per common share also increased +7% to 46 cents compared with 43 cents per common share for the 2002 second quarter. Given the current economic environment, several top All Star analysts were pleased with their performance in the second quarter and expect the second half of 2003 to be even stronger than the first half. If present positive sales and economic trends continue, the company believes that third quarter earnings per common share should approximate 48 cents to 51 cents and continues to expect to achieve record sales and earnings for 2003 with full-year earnings in a range of $1.68 to $1.72 per common share, modestly higher than the company's previous guidance. Strong financials and quality products have several top All Stars recommending MAS as a good long-term investment.

Navistar International Corporation (NYSE:NAV), the nation's largest combined commercial truck, school bus and mid-range diesel engine producer, reported that it returned to profitability in its third fiscal quarter ended July 31, 2003 and said that it is on track to be solidly profitable in the fourth quarter. This beat the Street's estimate by a penny, but it was a great improvement over last year. The third quarter profit was achieved despite continued softness in medium truck shipments, but several All Star analysts were encouraged by strong pickup in new medium truck orders in July. The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. (NYSE:GS) is a global investment banking and securities firm, providing a full range of investing, advisory and financing services worldwide to a substantial and diversified client base. Goldman Sachs said the quarter reflects strong operating results from its Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities franchise, as well as solid performances from its other core businesses, given the difficult environment. Goldman Sachs accomplished all this even though it has yet to see much evidence of an economic recovery. Once a stronger recovery does come, the company would likely experience even greater earnings estimate growth.
