Baker Hughes Inc. (NYSE: BHI) announced solid first-quarter results in April and believes it is well positioned to benefit from increased drilling and completion activity around the world. For its first quarter, earnings per share of 88 cents eclipsed the consensus by about 8.6% while revenues improved 20% to $997 million year over year.

IDEX Corporation (NYSE: IEX) is an applied solutions company and a member of the All Star Analyst Portfolio. The company announced, earlier this week, the acquisition of Quadro Engineering for $31 million in cash. Quadro is a leading provider of particle control solutions for the pharmaceutical and bio-pharmaceutical markets. It will operate as a standalone stand·a·lone

IDEX stated that Quadro's capabilities expands on its ability to provide customized solutions for the movement, transformation, measurement and dispense of high value fluids and solids. In April, IDEX announced that first-quarter sales advanced 25% to $333.3 million, while earnings per share of 45 cents (after adjusting for a 3-for-2 stock split) also increased on a year-over-year basis.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT) remains a fixture on the All Star Analyst Portfolio. In its first-quarter report, the hotels company announced that worldwide system-wide revenue per available room (RevPAR) increased 10.2% for Same-Store Hotels. Furthermore, earnings per share from continuing operations reached 48 cents, excluding items, which beat the consensus by approximately 26%. Analysts polled by Research Digest appreciate the company's investments in productivity enhancements, especially in customer relationship management, database management and call center. Starwood Hotels also has strong brands, especially within the upscale market segment and in major urban markets, and a strong balance sheet.
