5. DEFINITIONS
Summary A good year in 2005 The German OTC health market registered healthy growth in 2005, with value sales rising at a rate significantly above the CAGR for the review period. This positive development was underpinned by increased health consciousness, the effects of the ubiquitous wellness trend and - particularly - the ongoing effects of the health reforms, which came into effect in June 2004. All sectors experienced growth with the exception of digestive remedies, with the strongest sales growth registered by preventive healthcare products and OTC products related to stress-relief, such as vitamins and dietary supplements, NRT smoking cessation aids, eye care and calming and sleeping products. Pharmacies remain the most important distribution channel for OTC healthcare products, despite timid moves towards the liberalisation of distribution. Generics and private label products are important in certain areas and have benefited from ongoing difficult economic conditions, characterised by low consumer confidence and consequent sensitivity to prices.
