For students looking for both under-graduate or post-graduate courses, it is a big dilemma on how to decide upon the right country, college and course if they wish to study abroad. Choosing the right host country is the biggest question, along with so many others that students have to deal with when they consider studying abroad. This decision is so crucial that it has the potential to affect the course of their whole life ahead. Thus, all care, caution and consideration has to be applied while taking this decision. When one chooses a course in an international university, one also chooses a new country, culture, a way of living and new people. There are a lot of adjustment issues that have to be addressed. Also, in a foreign location, one not just learns about the course that one is pursuing but also about life in through a new perspective.

There are many academic advantages of studying abroad, hence students wish to take up courses in international colleges. In India, USA and UK have been the favorite education destinations for years. Australia and Singapore have also caught up in the recent years but the charm of the Americana and the British universities remains unmatched. Universities in these countries are full of bright Indian students who have achieved accolades there. The exposure and the environment that these foreign universities offer play an instrumental hand in molding the personality of students. One picks up analytical abilities and problem-solving skills that are much sought after by employers in the future. Not to say that Indian universities do not offer such an environment but the exposure that one can expect to get at a good foreign university remains unmatched by many Indian universities. Thus, students line up to take admission into the top foreign universities of the world.

So, if you are at such crossroads, where you have to take crucial decisions about choosing the right foreign university to study abroad, there are a lot many things that you need to take into consideration before taking the final plunge. Firstly and most importantly, you have to have a clear idea of the career that you want to pursue in life to be able to take the right decision at this time. You must match your career preference to your skills and abilities. Working backwards, you will be able to eliminate some degree of doubt from your mind. Once that is clear, you have to shortlist the course choices that you would require to undertake to be able to realize your dream of being successful in that career.

If you are looking at a post-graduate course in a foreign university, chances are that you are pretty clear and have less doubt in your mind. However, if you are a school pass-out and want to go abroad for an under-graduate course, then there is a possibility that you are completely shrouded in doubt and confusion about what to do next and which university to choose and how to go about it. Actually, choosing the right college is the most important first step. Once you have decided upon the right college, you can keep your efforts focused and work towards getting admission into that particular college. While chasing the perfect college might just be a mirage, you will do well by researching your options and evaluating all avenues before deciding upon any particular college.

A ready checklist to prepare this shortlist would be to weigh it against the following criteria: Firstly, find out if the university offers the course that you want to pursue and if the course matches the career choice that you have made. You can decide upon this by looking at the job and career opportunities that are available in that field. Then, you must carry out more research on the university itself. Get to know more about the faculty there, the lecturers, professors there. Then, you must also find out about the facilities that the university offers to the students apart from the course. Also, find out about the alumni of the institute and how they have fared in life. This might be a strenuous exercise but will help you in the long run when you go to study abroad.

Thus, once you have explored your own skills and decided upon a college after doing the requisite research, you can always go to a consultant for further guidance. Sometimes, just choosing one college is not possible. Then, you need to shortlist some colleges and courses that you think would satisfy your requirements. Once this exercise is done, you need to concentrate on the admission procedure to these colleges. Once you figure that out, start preparing for it. The other main area of focus is the finances. There are many banks that offer ready loans and also some universities offer scholarships. Studying abroad is a costly affair so you must see if it is affordable or not.

Another thing that must be kept in mind while deciding to study abroad is that the expectations should be in the right place. One has to be realistic and know that just the tag of any foreign university is not the passport to success. In the end, it is one''s capabilities and skills that ensure success in life.
