Alitalia cargo flight diverted to Boston after crew smells odor; no problem found

An Alitalia cargo flight that was diverted to Boston after the crew reported a possible problem with hazardous materials has been declared clean.

Officials say no problem was found Tuesday after the plane was checked at Logan International Airport. The crew on the flight from Milan, Italy to Miami had reported an odor and possible damage to a cargo door.

Airport spokesman Phil Orlandella says the four-member crew of Alitalia Flight 9180 used oxygen masks and landed safely just before 10 p.m. Tuesday night. He said the crew was examined by medical personnel at the scene and taken to a hospital as a precaution. No injuries were reported.

A hazardous materials crew found no damage and no hazardous material leakage on the MD-11 aircraft.

A call to the airline was not immediately returned.
