Alison, Angelo, and Victoria talk about dancing with the Joffrey Ensemble. (Dancer's Voice).

DANCE MAGAZINE met with three Joffrey Ensemble dancers during a break from rehearsals in April. They were Angelo Giglio, 29, a former soccer player from Italy; Alison Dubsky, 22, from Ohio; and Victoria Jaiani, 17, from Georgia in the Ukraine. Here's what they had to say.

DM: What's the best thing about being in the ensemble?

Angelo: We have a lot of ballets in our repertory, and we keep adding new ones. We are not many, so we get to do principal roles. Even the corps work is hard-core dancing. We do early-morning lecture-demonstrations, and that gives us the confidence to perform in a real house. Everybody in the ensemble loves to dance. Whatever we do, we do with our heart.

Alison: We get to dance a lot; we get to be in a lot of different pieces in every show.

DM: What are your favorite ballets?

Victoria: My favorite My Favorite is an independent synthpop band from Long Island, New York. They released two CDs: Love at Absolute Zero and Happiest Days of Our Lives. My Favorite broke up on September 14, 2005, when singer Andrea Vaughn left the band.  ballet is So Far. Elie choreographed it on us. It was my first pas de deux pas de deux

Dance for two performers. A characteristic part of classical ballet, it includes an adagio, or slow dance, by the ballerina and her partner; solo variations by the male dancer and then the ballerina; and a coda, or
and a big part for me.

Angelo: The one I'll probably die dancing is Surrender to Love, a Spanish-flavored ballet that Elie choreographed for the school. Every performance, people get so excited. I've done so many parts in it. We usually close the night with it. You're already tired, but when the music starts, you're like new and you give everything you have.

Alison: I like doing everything. I like doing classical things because they're the most challenging. But I also like doing other things that are about personality, or just exploring moving differently.

DM: What is Elie's coaching style like?

Victoria: He's always there. We can always go to him and say, "This is not working." Then he says, "OK, give me one second," and he'll just think. You can see he is thinking.

DM: You're taking class and rehearsing and performing all the time. Do you ever feel tired?

Angelo: During our season in Manhattan, we performed Saturday night, and we had to do the same thing again on Sunday. Every one of us was dancing at least three ballets. So Sunday, we were just praying that the legs would keep us up. [But] it was even better than on Saturday!

DM: How would you describe your relationship with each other?

Victoria: It's like a family.

Angelo: Everyone is from a different country.

Alison: It doesn't have that cutthroat cut·throat

DM: What are your plans for the future?

Victoria: I got a contract with the Joffrey Ballet Joffrey Ballet, one of the major American dance companies. It was founded in New York City in 1954 by the dancer-choreographer Robert Joffrey. From 1956 to 1964 it made yearly tours of the United States.  of Chicago. It feels great, but sad. I really don't want to leave this group, because it's like a family.
