Alion Partners with AGEIA to Add Sophisticated Physics to DoD Simulation and Training Applications.

Defense organizations will now have the same quality of movement used in games run on PCs, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3

MCLEAN, Va. -- Alion Science and Technology Alion Science and Technology (pronounced: ah-LYE-un) is an employee-owned technology solutions company delivering technical expertise and operational support to the Department of Defense, civilian government agencies and commercial customers. , an employee-owned technology solutions company, today announced the company has partnered with AGEIA AGEIA America Germany Egypt India America [TM] Technologies, the pioneer in hardware-accelerated physics for games. This partnership provides the integration of the popular AGEIA PhysX[TM] technology into the Delta3D Open Source Engine to enable real-world, real-time dynamic motion and interaction.

Alion has been actively contributing to the Delta3D Project for almost three years. Delta3D is an open source game engine that supports a variety of Department of Defense (DoD) modeling and simulation applications. With this partnership, Alion is making it possible for applications built on Delta3D to take advantage of the PhysX processor. This puts the power of physics in the hands of developers, dramatically accelerating the creation of cutting-edge simulations that feature complex physics-based environments.

Using AGEIA PhysX, when users create a simulated explosion, it causes dust and debris. Weapons have effects on targets that replicate what would happen in reality, and human and vehicle movement is more lifelike.

Using AGEIA PhysX, Alion can build even more powerful training and simulation applications for the Marine Corps that will be deployed on the Deployable Virtual Training Environment (DVTE DVTE Distributed Virtual Training Environment ) system - a program that will provide deployable simulations on laptops to train warfighters for combat environments. As a result, when Marines use DVTE to train for convoy operations against improvised explosive devices Noun 1. improvised explosive device - an explosive device that is improvised

(IEDs), they will encounter a driving experience that mirrors the actual movement of their armored vehicle. And when they practice defensive operations, they will use weapons with 360 degree rotation and physically accurate ballistics ballistics (bəlĭs`tĭks), science of projectiles. Interior ballistics deals with the propulsion and the motion of a projectile within a gun or firing device. , just like they will experience in theatre.

"Through Alion's partnership with AGEIA, the DoD will have access to one of the best physics engines available, and it can be used free of charge. This further promotes the value of the Delta3D open source environment throughout the Defense Department, providing programs with superior technology without the cost and vendor lock in that usually accompanies technology adoption," said Rear Admiral Dick Brooks Dick Brooks (April 14 1942 – February 1 2006) was an American NASCAR driver. Born in Porterville, California, he was the 1969 NASCAR Rookie of the Year, and went on to win the 1973 Talladega 500. After he retired, he served as a NASCAR sportscaster for a brief period of time.  (USN, Ret.), Alion National Security Group Manager. "Now defense programs can use the same physics engine used in major games run on PCs, Xbox 360[TM] and Playstation[R] 3. The result will be more powerful and effective training and simulation applications."

The partnership enables Alion to distribute the PhysX runtimes, SDK (Software Developer's Kit) See developer's toolkit and Windows SDK.

and API as part of the Delta3D project. Delta3D users will be able to add state-of-the-art physics capabilities to their Delta3D open source applications without additional royalties or separate licensing agreements. If the program using the application wants to increase the resolution and speed of movements enabled by AGEIA PhysX, they can leverage the power of the PhysX processor to create even more realistic simulations.

"Alion is taking simulation and training into new places, and we're excited that they've chosen to take AGEIA PhysX technology along for the ride," said Manju Hegde, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of AGEIA. "Our technology has been used extensively in the gaming world, and considering the type of movement we've focused on - vehicle dynamics Vehicle dynamics refers to the dynamics of vehicles, here assumed to be ground vehicles.

For two-wheeled vehicles see Bicycle and motorcycle dynamics. For the dynamics of air vehicles see Aerodynamics.
, debris scatter, weapon systems - there is an obvious applicability to Defense training applications. With the dedication and talent of the Alion team, we have high expectations for what they can achieve using the AGEIA PhysX solution."
