The Mendelssohn concerto is one of the most perfect in the repertoire and it is good to see it back in the popular position it deserves. Its familiarity may disguise the fact that it is hugely demanding on the soloist - there is hardly a moment of respite throughout the three movements. Ibragimova took it all in her stride. Credit for this enjoyable concert must also go to Andre de Ridder. He has worked closely with Mark Elder at the Halle and he reflected his master's insistence on high standards as he conducted the orchestra.
