Algoma Steel Inc. today announced that on August 23rd, it achieved an important milestone in the commissioning of its Direct Strip Production Complex by successfully casting the first heat on the new complex. The Company expects to roll the first coil in the next six to seven weeks. Algoma plans to have the complex in full commercial production by mid-1998.

The Direct Strip Production Complex is a new state-of-the-art facility supplied by Danieli, Italy, consisting of a thin slab caster and hot strip mill. The facility has an annual capacity of 2.2 million tons. Algoma's plans are for annual production of approximately 1.6 million tons of hot rolled coil from the complex commencing in mid-1998.
