The 9th All Africa Games took place from 11 to 23 July and saw the continent's top athletes compete in 27 sports, five more than during the 2005 Games in Abuja, Nigeria. The Algerian government spent more than $100m to renovate the eight villages housing athletes, and nearly 1,500 journalists were accredited to cover the event. During the games, the Supreme Council for Sport in Africa (SCSA) and the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (Anoca) also met in the city. Three days after the All Africa Games, Algiers was scheduled to host the 2nd Afro-Asian Games, from 26 July to 4 August.
