Algae's feminine touch.


Yoshifumi Hida and colleagues at the University of Shiga Prefecture in Japan report isolating "natural estrogens" produced by single-celled Chlorella algae in a freshwater pond. In lab tests, these primarily female sex hormones sped ovary maturation and inhibited the development of testes in carp.
