SOUTHBRIDGE Alfred J. DiPietro, 84, of Ashland Ave., passed away peacefully in his home on Thursday, Oct. 22nd, after an illness.

His wife of 47 years, Barbara M. (St. Martin St. Martin

) DiPietro, died in 2002. He leaves a son, Marc A. DiPietro and his wife Eve of Southbridge; two daughters: Gina M. DiPietro and her husband Majid Goharzadeh and Bonnie Lovely and her husband Stephen, all of Charlton; nine grandchildren: Ariel Goharzadeh, Nicholas Goharzadeh, Adrianna M. DiPietro, Anthony A. DiPietro, Alfred J. DiPietro, Vincent DiPietro, Stephen P. Lovely, Matthew A. Lovely, and Paul J. Lovely; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by four brothers: Anthony DiPietro, Frank DiPietro, Armand DiPietro, and Samuel DiPietro; and a sister, Anna Collins. He was born in Southbridge, the son of Francesco and Celia (Petromatre) DiPietro. He served as a Sergeant in the US Army Corps of Engineers during the Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953. At the end of World War II, Korea was divided at the 38th parallel into Soviet (North Korean) and U.S. (South Korean) zones of occupation. .

Alfred founded D&D Welding & Salvage in 1965 with his brother, Frank and remained active with the company even after retiring several years ago. He was a member of the Southbridge Lions Club for 33 years and received the Melvin Jones Award, which is the highest award a Lions member can receive. He was a corporator CORPORATOR. One who is a member of a corporation.

He was a supporter and contributor to many charitable organizations and projects throughout his community. He was an avid supporter and contributor to Cohasse Country Club in Southbridge. He was a respected member of the American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Membership is open to veterans of World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.  Post 31 and was the recipient of the Outstanding Service Award from the Southbridge Chapter 101 of the Disabled American Veterans The Disabled American Veterans, or DAV, is an organization for disabled veterans that helps them and their families through various means. It currently has over 1.2 million members.

The DAV was controversial during the 2006 election cycle.

He was an airplane pilot and enjoyed flying for many years.

Alfred's funeral will be held on Monday, Oct. 26th, from the Daniel T. Morrill Funeral Home, 130 Hamilton St., Southbridge, with a Mass at 10:00am in St. Mary's Church, 263 Hamilton St., Southbridge. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Southbridge. Calling hours in the funeral home will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25th, from 2:00 to 6:00pm.
