) diode lasers: a 2 watt diode laser in a fiber-coupled package and a 2.5 watt diode laser in a chip-on-carrier package. A monolithically-integrated grating defines the 976 nm output wavelength, which is stable relative to changes in temperature and drive current while maintaining a narrow spectral width The amount of the electromagnetic spectrum that a laser beam covers. Thus far, it has been impossible to produce light pulses with zero spectral width. For example, a 1540 nm pulse might actually cover 1539.9 to 1540.1 nm, but not 1540.0 dead on. See optical bands. . These lasers do not require any cooling or external components to maintain wavelength, reducing their energy consumption by up to three times over a thermally-controlled pump laser A laser used as the pump for an optical amplifier or other laser. See EDFA and laser. .

Alfalight will demonstrate their WST products and exhibit their full product lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime.  in Booth # 2018 at the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) 2006 in Long Beach, California Long Beach is a city located in southern Los Angeles County, California, USA, on the Pacific coast. It borders Orange County on its southeast edge. It is about 20 miles (30 km) south of downtown Los Angeles.  (May 23-25).

"These represent the first entries in a line of products that will be based on our unique Wavelength Stabilized Technology for precision pumping of fiber and solid-state lasers A solid-state laser is a laser that uses a gain medium that is a solid, rather than a liquid such as in dye lasers or a gas as in gas lasers. Semiconductor-based lasers are also in the solid state, but are generally considered as a separate class from solid-state lasers (see ," said Ron Bechtold, vice president of sales and marketing for Alfalight. "These diode lasers enable precision pumping of high-performance pulsed fiber lasers without additional components or cooling."

The diodes are available with 2.0 watts in a 6-pin fiber-coupled package with 105(micro)m/0.15NA fiber (part number AM6-976CW-20-201), or with 2.5 watts in Q- or C-mount chip-on-carrier packages (part numbers AMQ-976CW-02-251 and AMC-976CW-02-251). The wavelength drift is only 0.07 nm/degrees C with a linewidth of 0.3 nm, representing five and ten times improvement, respectively, over traditional multimode pump diode laser performance. No additional components or subassemblies are required, as the wavelength stabilization Stabilization

technology is integrated directly onto the semiconductor chip itself. The units are physically identical to their non-WST counterparts eliminating the need for any special handling in the manufacturing process.

About Alfalight's Wavelength Stabilization Technology

Wavelength Stabilized Technology was developed by Alfalight Inc., under a contract with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory as part of the agency's Laser Development Engineering and Research Applications (LADERA) program.

Alfalight's WST monolithically integrates grating feedback intrinsic to the multimode diode laser cavity. The semiconductor grating stabilizes the wavelength and narrows the linewidth of the light emitted by the laser. This stabilization method is an integral part of the manufacturing process and defines the output wavelength with much greater precision than other methods of stabilization, resulting in higher system performance and a simplified system design without impacting device reliability or cost.

This capability allows design engineers to precisely pump narrow absorption lines in solid-state and fiber lasers with little or no active temperature control. Alfalight has initially focused on the important 976 nm wavelength required to pump the narrow absorption peak in ytterbium-doped fiber lasers. WST has been demonstrated in diode laser bars and is applicable to other wavelengths.
