The program prepares caregivers to supervise and assist residents who administer their own medications, as well as to directly distribute medication to residents when needed and allowed by state regulations, said Karen Wayne, president of ALFA. By using this program, facility staff will be better equipped to guide and supervise residents in medication management, while ensuring compliance with state regulations.

Development of the training program, called Medication Training for Assisted Living, is being underwritten by PharMerica and is being produced by ALFA's educational arm, Assisted Living University. ALFA is the largest nonprofit A corporation or an association that conducts business for the benefit of the general public without shareholders and without a profit motive.

, and learn the purpose and use of medications and the techniques of assisting with medications," said Wayne.

"This user-friendly program focuses on the important regulations that are relevant to assisted living, thereby helping this fast-growing industry keep pace with fluctuating state health care regulations," said R. Scott Jones Scott Jones may refer to:

The program can be modified by assisted living providers to meet varying state regulations requiring eight, 16 or 24 hours of training through selection of recommended lessons. The curriculum also can be expanded to a full 40 hours of training by including additional medication review demonstrations.

The program, which features a collection of best practices, derived throughout the assisted living industry, includes a manual featuring lessons, checklists and techniques to promote data retention and understanding. Unlike other unwieldy publications that cover everything from long-term care to home care, this manual is industry-specific and helps ensure that facilities maintain the doctrines of assisted living. An instructor's guide features prepared lessons and exercises to help train staff. The materials are designed for self-study combined with practical, residence-based, in-service sessions or for use in a classroom setting.

The program is part of ALFA's Assisted Living Training System designed to help facilities enhance resident choice, independence and dignity. It is expected to be available by Sept. 1. The price is $450 for ALFA members; copies can be obtained by calling 800/258-7030. For more information about ALFA, please call 703/691-8100, or visit ALFA's Web site at www.alfa.org.
