Companies in the software industry account for 46 percent, followed by Internet companies, which account for 17 percent. Communications companies represent 9 percent, while computer & peripherals companies account for 5 percent. Semiconductor, components & electronics companies account for 2 percent and other technology companies represent 3 percent of the Fast 500.

27 Percent of Fast 500 Winners Based in the Western United States

The West has 27 percent of the winners. It had 30 percent in 1999 and 35 percent in 1998. Despite this decline, it still has more Fast 500 winners than any other individual region. This is the first time in the Fast 500's six-year history that none of the top five are based in the West, although three of the top 10 have headquarters there.
