The award is being presented at a special luncheon during Gartner Group's Reshaping IS Conference in Chicago on July 13, 1995.

The Excellence in Technology Award selection committee recognized Trotman's leadership in the company's implementation of an enterprise-wide networked computing environment to streamline design and production of new cars. The "Global Studio" enables engineers in Europe, America and Asia to concurrently share visual information and work on 3-D models. Some of the advantages of the system include enhanced design control, reduced international travel expenses and shorter design cycles.

Ford's new networked computing environment will help the company's new initiative to create a more efficient organization with less duplication in design and engineering, leverage worldwide resources, and promote best practices. Potentially, these changes could net efficiencies in capital investment and engineering expenses of more than $2 billion.

Trotman is a 40-year veteran of Ford Motor Company. Prior to becoming chairman in 1993, he was president of Ford Automotive Group and had led Ford operations in North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. , Europe and Asia in earlier assignments. Bill Powers, executive director of Ford's Information Services See Information Systems.  and Research Laboratory, accepted the Excellence in Technology Award on Trotman's behalf.

"Ford has been a worldwide company almost from its inception, but we are only now beginning to operate in a truly global fashion," Powers said. "Essentially, we've re-engineered our entire organization -- from design, engineering, and manufacturing to marketing, sales and service -- to take full advantage of our vast global technical and business resources. To do this, during the past decade we've invested heavily in information technology, a key discipline for our emerging global operation."

The Excellence in Technology Award committee is comprised of 10 top information technology executives from the world's leading companies. This year marks the eleventh annual award, with Trotman and Ford joining past winners such as William Howell William Peter Howell (born December 29, 1869, Penrith, New South Wales. died July 14, 1940, Castlereagh, New South Wales) was an Australian cricketer who played in 18 Tests from 1898 to 1904.  of J.C.
