Alex, of Lockwood, lost her close friend Gareth Robinson, an engineer, of Netherton, in February after he lost his battle with pancreatic cancer pancreatic cancer

Mr Robinson's family - wife Helen and three children Emma, Jade and Gareth - received the support of Macmillan Cancer Support and Alex wants to do her bit to help.

Last year she helped organise a fundraiser for the charity and raised pounds 6,600. Now she hopes by walking over hot, burning embers she can continue to help others families like the Robinsons.

"I was fine about it to start but now I'm a bit scared," she joked.

"I thought it sounded easier than doing a 23 mile walk but now I'm not so sure.

"Macmillan do so much more than anyone realises.

"They help with the emotional side of things as well and help families.

"Gareth has two daughters and a son with Down's Syndrome and they gave them so much help, support and advice for what they were going through.

"It was extremely difficult to explain to them but the Macmillan Nurses really helped them.

"While he was still with us we organised a charity sports auction to raise money for Macmillan due to the support they had already provided for the family. In the year after Macmillan were on hand to offer advice and more importantly, emotional support to the whole family."

Alex will complete the fire walk at the Silkwood Business Park, Wakefield, on November 15.
