Alex Jimenez, who moved from Provence three years ago and set up Blackfin Translation, now has 250 translators working for him across a number of countries.

The entrepreneur entrepreneur (än'trəprənûr`) [Fr.,=one who undertakes], person who assumes the organization, management, and risks of a business enterprise. , who works out of the Lynnwood Business Centre on Westgate Road, says he had grown his business by using experienced translators instead of relying on foreign students like some of his rivals.

Blackfin, which works for clients including Crutes law firm, outdoor clothing company Barbour and food and drink carton manufacturer Sig Combibloc, says he is now hoping to open a London office to crack the southern market.

Mr Jimenez said: "I was working for a company in Newcastle who worked in France doing some web hosting Making a Web site available on the Internet. Many ISPs host a few personal Web pages for an individual at no additional cost above the monthly service fee, but the address is subordinate to the ISP; for example, www.friendlyisp.com/pat_smith.  but decided I didn't want to work for someone else anymore.

"I realised that because of the state of North-East manufacturing, people are working abroad more and more and so there is a big demand for translation.

"I employ freelance translators in German, Spanish, Italian, French, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese and am hoping to open an office down south.

"The eventual aim would be to open offices across Europe."
