 asking for money for charity.

He targeted homes in Walsgrave, asking for donations for a "Cross Channel Water Challenge" - allegedly to raise money for people suffering from heart disease.

The man, who spoke with a northern accent, is described as white, aged around 40, with tattoos on his face, neck and hands.

A police spokesman urged people to be wary of "cold call" charity collectors.

He said: "If in doubt, do not let strangers into your home and do not part with any money."

"Periodically there will be conmen trying to take advantage of people's good natures."

Anyone who has been approached in this way is asked to call Detective Constable An official of a Municipal Corporation whose primary duties are to protect and preserve the peace of the community.

In medieval law, a constable was a high functionary under the French and English kings.
