Alereon and Intel Demonstrate 480Mbps at Wireless USB Developers Conference; First Public Demonstration of an Integrated Intel and Alereon Solution.

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Alereon, a leading fabless semiconductor company A fabless semiconductor company specializes in the design and sale of hardware devices implemented on semiconductor chips. It achieves an advantage by outsourcing the fabrication of the devices to a specialized semiconductor manufacturer called a semiconductor foundry or "fab.  developing wireless solutions for the Ultrawideband (UWB (Ultra-WideBand) A wireless technology that uses less power and provides higher speed than 802.11 Wi-Fi networks or first-generation Bluetooth products. UWB is expected to provide wireless video transmission for home theater systems, cable TV, auto safety and ) and Wireless USB (WUSB See wireless USB. ) markets, today with Intel, showed a fully integrated prototype running at 480Mbps. The demonstration at the Wireless USB Developers Conference included a WUSB Media Access Controller (MAC) from Intel, and a WUSB physical layer (PHY See physical layer and physical. ) from Alereon running at the maximum speed for wireless USB.

For the demonstration's physical layer, Alereon provided its AL4400-EVB UWB evaluation board, which is a complete WiMedia-MBOA and WUSB compliant PHY, on a compact PC-Card form factor module. The Alereon AL4400-EVB is a follow-on to the company's popular AL4000 evaluation kit (EVK), announced earlier this year. The AL4000-EVK was the industry's first complete platform for prototyping and developing UWB applications. Alereon is the only UWB silicon provider to demonstrate a full 480Mbps at the physical layer.

"Today's demonstration is a real milestone in the progress of WUSB development," said Jeff Ravencraft, Intel Technology Strategist and USB-IF president and chairman. "Intel will continue evolving the PC, with an emphasis on wireless connectivity to make it easier for people to connect to their favorite computer peripherals."

"The day when computer users can enjoy a life without wires is fast approaching," said Eric Broockman, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , Alereon. "Alereon and Intel have shown that the computing platform on which we all depend can be made even easier to use - by eliminating all the connecting cables - and data sharing can be streamlined."
