Alenia Marconi Selects E&S simFUSION for Royal Air Force Simulators; PC-Based Image Generators to Power Tucano Aircraft Trainers.

Business Editors

SALT LAKE CITY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 14, 2001

Evans & Sutherland Computer Corp. (E&S(R)) (Nasdaq: ESCC ESCC Eastern Shore Community College
ESCC East Sussex County Council
ESCC Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma
ESCC Enhanced Serial Communication(s) Controller
ESCC Electrically Self-Calibrating Cavity
), the leader in delivering PC simulation solutions, has been selected by Alenia Marconi to provide E&S simFUSION(TM) image generators for flight simulators flight simulator, device providing a controlled environment in which a flight trainee can experience conditions approximating those of actual flight. A simulator generally consists of an enclosure housing a working replica of the interior of the cockpit of an  at the United Kingdom's RAF base at Linton-on-Ouse, Yorkshire.

The simFUSION systems will provide out-the-window visuals for four Tucano aircraft dynamic flight simulators based at the flight training school there.

In all, 26 E&S simFUSION systems will replace 12-year-old image generators in the Tucano simulators, providing increased functionality and a wider field of view. The Tucano is a single-engine turbo-prop aircraft used by the RAF for basic flight training. Its tandem cockpit and jet-like handling characteristics prepare pilots for more advanced flight training, including fast-jet aircraft.

"We chose simFUSION because it is the PC-based solution that offers the right combination of price/performance, image quality and simulation features," said Nigel Ghost, chief visuals engineer, Alenia Marconi Systems Alenia Marconi Systems (AMS) was a major European integrated defence electronics company and an equal shares joint venture between BAE Systems and Finmeccanica until its dissolution on May 3 2005. . "For our requirements, adherence to standards was a key factor, and simFUSION's OpenGL compliance allowed full access to our preferred COTS API (Application Programming Interface) A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol. , Vega(TM).

"Last, but not least, guaranteed delivery and a comprehensive support and training package were other key benefits offered by the simFUSION solution. Evans & Sutherland's technical backup and support is second to none."

Alenia Marconi's flight application software will be used along with MultiGen Paradigm's Vega API to provide high-fidelity runway lighting and environmental effects. simFUSION offers built-in facilities for dynamic texture refresh as well as dynamic control of terrain cell paging.
