Alcoa to Suspend Operations At St. Croix Refinery.Business Editors PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 2, 2000 Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals Alcoa World Alumina and Chemicals is a joint venture between Alumina Limited (40% share) and Alcoa (60% share) and is abbreviated to AWAC. AWAC's business is the mining of bauxite, the extraction of alumina (aluminium oxide) and the smelting of aluminium. (AWAC) announced today that it will suspend operations at its alumina alumina (əl `mĭnə) or aluminum oxide, Al2O3, chemical compound with m.p. about 2,000°C; and sp. gr. about 4.0. refinery located on St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, on January 31, 2001. The refinery has a nameplate capacity of 600,000 metric tons per year (mtpy) and is running this year at a production rate of approximately 450,000 mtpy. The St. Croix refinery has been operating since December 1997 and currently sells alumina to Alcoa-operated aluminum smelters in the U.S. Based on supply available from the company's other refineries, the output from St. Croix is not needed at this time. Future production from St. Croix will be evaluated in light of internal and external supply commitments.
