Alcoa aims for 10 million trees.


Aluminum giant Alcoa Alcoa

U.S. company, the world's largest producer of aluminum. Established in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1888, it adopted the name Aluminum Co. of America in 1907. Alcoa introduced aluminum foil in 1910 and found uses for aluminum in the emerging aviation and automobile industries.

For the Ten Million Trees program, local Alcoa offices are encouraged to provide resources for employees to plant trees on their personal property and in their communities. Projects may involve other local partners.

"We view Ten Million Trees as an important way to engage employees in a 'beyond compliance' effort to improve the environment in Alcoa communities," Atkins says. "To be the best company in the world, we must support programs that go beyond the facility fence."

Company officials predict success despite expected cultural differences and varying local priorities as the company attempts to implement the broad undertaking across five continents. Alcoa, a $23.5 billion behemoth behemoth (bē`hĭmŏth, bĭhē`–) [Heb.,=plural of beast], large, fanciful primeval monster, like Leviathan, evoking the hippopotamus mentioned in the Book of Job. , has 131,000 employees in 43 countries.
