Alcoa To Start Up St. Croix Alumina Refinery.PITTSBURGH--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 20, 1997--Alcoa World Alumina alumina (əl `mĭnə) or aluminum oxide, Al2O3, chemical compound with m.p. about 2,000°C; and sp. gr. about 4.0. and Chemicals (AWAC) announced today that it has begun preparations to restart its St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands alumina refinery. The refinery has a rated operating capacity of 600,000 metric tons per year. Start up is expected to take 10 to 15 weeks. Commenting on the decision to restart the refinery, Robert F.
