Alcoa Michigan facilities to benefit in military castings from national defense spending bill.

Howmet Castings Headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, Howmet, a division of Alcoa is a world leader in the investment casting of superalloys, aluminum and titanium primarily for jet aircraft and industrial gas turbine (IGT) engine components.  (Alcoa Inc.), Whitehall, Mich., and Alcoa Automotive Castings Inc., Fruitport, Mich., will share in $ 24 rail lion in advanced materials Advanced Materials is a leading peer-reviewed materials science journal published every two weeks. U.S. Sens. Carl Levin Carl Milton Levin (born June 28, 1934) is a Democratic United States Senator from Michigan and is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services. He has been in the Senate since 1979 and Michigan's senior senator since 1995.  (D-Mich.) and Debbie Stabenow Deborah Ann "Debbie" Stabenow (born Deborah Ann Greer on April 29, 1950) is a Democratic United States Senator from Michigan.

In the 2000 election, Stabenow defeated the Republican incumbent, Senator Spencer Abraham.
(D-Mich.) announced the passage of the $400 billion-plus military spending bill in the Senate, including $350 million in spending on combat vehicle technology and other military projects in Michigan.

Howmet and Alcoa will be tapped by the Defense Dept. for its advanced materials technology on two fronts:

* $10 million for the Air Force's metals affordability initiative, a government-industry cooperative program The Cooperative Program is a unified funds collection program of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) designed to support SBC seminaries, mission agencies and denominational ministries.  to develop new aerospace materials and alloys. Howmet will work on new materials to reduce aircraft engine maintenance costs for the next generation of fighter aircraft fighter aircraft

 and unmanned aircraft.

* $14 million for the Army's advanced lightweight structures initiative, a program to develop a new generation of titanium, ceramic and alum/tram materials for cannons, vehicles and armor systems. Howmet and Alcoa are among the partners working on that effort.

A series of bills lays out military spending for 2005. Levin and Stabenow last week supported the $416 billion Senate version, while 14 of Michigan's 15 House members supported the $417 billion House version.

The House and Senate now must work out a compromise between the bills. The spending plan must receive final approval from President Bush.

The bills would provide $350 million for Army research on combat vehicles and automotive technology, Levin said. Much of that research is done at two Army research facilities in Warren, Mich.

The bills would provide $900 million for the Army's Stryker armored vehicle, which is supplied by General Dynamics Land Systems, Sterling Heights, Mich. General Dynamics also has research, development and manufacturing operations in Muskegon Township and Norton Shores, Mich.

Rep. Peter Hoekstra, (R-Mich.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said the bill is the largest intelligence spending measure in History.
