) have approved the Company's SANOVA(R) antimicrobial antimicrobial /an·ti·mi·cro·bi·al/ (-mi-kro´be-al)
1. killing microorganisms or suppressing their multiplication or growth.

2. an agent with such effects.
for use on poultry, poultry parts and organs post-chill.

In a typical automated poultry processing facility, carcasses are immersed in a hydro-chiller prior to cut up, deboning or other further processing and packaging. SANOVA has been approved since 1998 for pre-chill use in poultry processing plants to substantially reduce human health threats caused by microbiological pathogens such as E. coli E. coli: see Escherichia coli.
E. coli
 in full Escherichia coli

Species of bacterium that inhabits the stomach and intestines. E. coli can be transmitted by water, milk, food, or flies and other insects.
, Salmonella and Campylobacter Campylobacter

Genus of gram-negative spiral-shaped bacteria infecting mammals. Many species, especially C. fetus, cause miscarriage in sheep and cattle. C. jejuni is a common cause of food poisoning. Sources include meats (particularly chicken) and unpasteurized milk.
. The product is presently used in 28 processing plants for antimicrobial treatment of roughly 5 billion pounds of poultry on an annual basis.

This latest approval for SANOVA use post-chill provides the poultry industry with a much needed safe and effective method to address potential cross contamination cross contamination Medical practice The passsage of pathogens indirectly from one Pt to another due to use of improper sterilization procedures, unclean instruments, or recycling of products  which may occur in the hydro-chilling process, or new contamination in the cut-up, grinding or further processing of poultry products. Most food safety experts believe that a "multi-hurdle" approach to pathogen reduction is necessary for effective control.

SANOVA is now the most broadly approved antimicrobial for use on food. Previous approvals include use on red meat pre-chill, red meat post-chill, intact fruits and vegetables in processing plants and poultry pre-chill.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Joseph A. Sasenick, noted that, "The expanding regulatory approvals for use of SANOVA are testimony to the safety and performance of Alcide's technology. Several poultry customers have expressed an interest in using SANOVA on whole carcasses, parts and organs post-chill. Our Food Safety group will begin the commercialization process this summer."
