The association between the companies is built on their mutual desire to stimulate the market for Internet appliances and the developers creating applications for them. Sun intends to support Alcatel as they bring their Internet screenphone to market.

It is a customized implementation of a full suite of Java technologies based on JavaOS(TM) for Consumers(TM). Alcatel's expertise combined with Sun's leading edge embedded device software and Java technology will result in a new breed of devices that enable the consumer to utilize the power of the network without a personal computer.

The Alcatel Internet screenphone utilizes JavaOS(TM) for Consumers(TM) that provides a natural platform for consumer appliances such as screenphones. The Alcatel Internet screenphone will also support the JavaScript technology.
