Alcatel and SGS-THOMSON sign agreement on high-speed telecommunications technology.PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 12, 1997--Alcatel and SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics have signed an agreement to promote, manufacture and sell high-speed communications systems that enable the transmission of video, Internet data and other high-bandwidth services over conventional telephone lines. Alcatel has signed an agreement with SGS-THOMSON to license its chipset of integrated circuits Integrated circuits Miniature electronic circuits produced within and upon a single semiconductor crystal, usually silicon. Integrated circuits range in complexity from simple logic circuits and amplifiers, about 1/20 in. (1. (ICs) for implementing ATM over Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line See DSL. (communications, protocol) Digital Subscriber Line - (DSL, or Digital Subscriber Loop, xDSL - see below) A family of digital telecommunications protocols designed to allow high speed data communication over the existing copper telephone lines between end-users and (ADSL See DSL. ADSL - Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line ) technology with rate adaptive capability, which increases by a factor of over 200 data transmission over existing telephone subscriber loop networks. SGS-THOMSON chose Alcatel's ATM over ADSL and Discreet Multi-Tone (DMT See DSL. ) technologies because it is one of the best technologies to provide ubiquitous services to the end customers. It will also be compliant with the most-advanced solution standardized by ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC. and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Sophia Antipolis technical park, Nice, France, www.etsi.org) A non-profit membership organization founded in 1988, dedicated to standardizing information and communication technologies (ICT) throughout Europe. , the U.S. and European telecommunications standards bodies Following are some of the standards bodies defined in this database. Martin de Prycker, Vice-President of Alcatel Telecom Broadband Division, said, "This agreement consolidates our position in this emerging technology, which is of great interest to telecommunications service providers and end users alike as it offers significantly increased functionality from existing infrastructure. By licensing our ADSL chipset to SGS-THOMSON, we will encourage the deployment of our technology and assure interoperability of equipment from different equipment suppliers." Aldo Romano, Corporate Vice-President of SGS-THOMSON's Dedicated Products Group, said, "This agreement will enable us to be one of the first suppliers of ADSL products on the market and will further strengthen our already broad portfolio of technologies. With Alcatel, we will promote a family of ADSL products and our first goal is a more highly integrated chipset, using SGS-THOMSON's advanced processes, which will be available at the end of this year." The current chipset is for use in central office switch and network termination or terminal equipment. By migrating these designs to even more advanced manufacturing processes this will be further enhanced by the end of 1997, offering customers improved performance, greater ease of use and lower cost. The agreement between Alcatel and SGS-THOMSON will provide a dual source to the open market of the chipset, ensuring volume availability of the devices and the availability of the current chipset in June 1997.
