: ALA) with a five-year contract for a turnkey Global System For Mobile Communications (communications) Global System for Mobile Communications - (GSM, originally "Groupe de travail Sp?ciale pour les services Mobiles") One of the major standards for digital cellular communications, in use in over 60 countries and serving over one billion subscribers.  (GSM) network. The contract foresees, in a first phase, the installation of a network to cover Kenya's two most important cities, Nairobi and Mombassa. This initial network will be installed during the summer 2000. Kenya is a country where Alcatel had, until now, a relatively limited presence.

Alcatel will first supply an EVOLIUM GSM mobile network featuring a 50,000 subscriber capacity mobile switching center A switching center is a node in a telecommunications Circuit switching network which is connected to either another switching center and/or to end user devices. Switching centers are aware of other centers and possible routes between them such that on demand a center can establish , an operation and maintenance center and base stations. To meet the needs of Kencell's subscribers, Alcatel also will deliver an intelligent network platform capable of offering value-added services A value-added service (VAS) is a telecommunications industry term for non-core services or, in short, all services beyond standard voice calls and fax transmissions.  such as prepaid pre·pay

The network will provide mobile telephony services to more than 3.5 million people - more than 10% of the country's population. Extension programs are planned starting at the end of 2000 to meet the needs for enhanced coverage and traffic development.

Gerard Dega, Alcatel's president for Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, the Indian sub-continent and France, said, "We are confident that mobile telephony will expand rapidly in Kenya, and we are fully committed (Law) committed to prison for trial, in distinction from being detained for examination.
