The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and ) agreement to deliver Distributed Mobile Switching Center (DMSC) solutions. Through this agreement resulting from a long standing relationship, Alcatel and Spatial Wireless will jointly deploy core network solutions that combine the Spatial Atrium(R) portfolio with Alcatel's industry-leading Evolium(TM) mobile infrastructure products family.

In addition to wireless switching functions, the GSM DMSC offers distributed architecture, low footprint and scalability, thus dramatically reducing operational and capital expenses. With the addition of the DMSC, Alcatel has a complete solution that allows U.S. mobile operators to roll out GSM, GPRS/EDGE and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) The GSM implementation of the 3G wireless phone system. "Alcatel is today one of the world's leading suppliers of GSM/GPRS/EDGE/UMTS solutions and networking equipment. Our alliance with Alcatel will incorporate Spatial Atrium(R)'s distributed mobile switching technology as a powerful complement to Alcatel's Evolium(TM) multi-standard capabilities," said Pardeep Kohli, Spatial Wireless' CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "Together, we will deliver solutions that not only enable operators to optimize the operational and capital cost of their current networks, but also prepare them to evolve to the 3G future."

"We selected Spatial Wireless because of their proven track record of customer deployments in North America," said David Owen, Senior Vice President of Alcatel in North America. "Our agreement with Spatial Wireless will integrate the benefits of distributed mobile switching solutions into Alcatel's end-to-end solution that will answer North American operators' needs today. Working with the major player in DMSC like Spatial Wireless is a key step to penetrate the North American market to which Alcatel is strongly committed. This also reinforces Alcatel's service and commercial presence in North America."

Spatial Atrium(R) operates in a distributed call server connected to a media gateway, managed by an element management system. It offers high capacity, multi-protocol core switch and services innovation that supports DMSC solutions. Furthermore, it allows network overlay deployments for Gateway Mobile Switching Center and network services solutions for GSM and UMTS networks.

It is the first readily available DMSC on the market and is commercially deployed today in 2G/2.5G networks. It supports operators' performance standards by offering superior density and scalability, geographic redundancy and any-to-any TDM/IP/ATM bearer. Thanks to the Spatial Atrium(R) product solution, mobile operators can achieve operational and capital cost savings while improving network efficiencies.

The Alcatel Evolium(TM) solution comprises a Wireless Media Gateway, a radio access network (Base Stations and Base Station Controllers), Mobile Switching Centers, Home Location Registers, an Intelligent Network platform for value-added services, as well as a GPRS core network The GPRS system is used by GSM Mobile phones, the most common mobile phone system in the world (as of 2004), for transmitting IP packets. The GPRS Core Network is the centralised part of the GPRS system and also provides support for WCDMA based 3G networks.  infrastructure. Alcatel Evolium(TM) end-to-end solutions support GSM, High Speed Data, GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations. , EDGE and UMTS for 3G technologies.

Both Alcatel and Spatial Wireless will be present at CTIA Wireless 2004 in Atlanta, (March 22-24), a global event serving every aspect of wireless including service providers, retailers, developers, manufacturers and consumers.
