Alcatel Selects ON Semiconductor's Power-Management Solution for USB-Based ADSL Modem; Solution-Based Approach to Power Management Provides Unique Value to Customers.

Business Editors & High-Tech Writers

TOULOUSE, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 18, 2002

ON Semiconductor (Nasdaq:ONNN) today announced that Alcatel's microelectronics group has chosen the company's USB 1.1 compatible DC-to-DC power-management solution for its DynaMiTe TM MTK MTK - Maa- ja Metsätaloustuottajain Keskusliitto Mtk ry (Central Union of Agricultural Producers and Forest Owners)
MTK - Magyar Testgyakorlók Köre (Hungarian soccer team)
MTK - Masked Target Kill
MTK - Measurement Table Kit
MTK - Montauk
MTK - More to Come (journalism)
-20152 USB (Universal Serial Bus) ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) Modem Solution.

"ON Semiconductor provided us a low-cost power supply solution that would support USB v1.1 standards and `dying gasp' functionality. With this new component on our solution we are able to provide customers with the product they require to meet increasing demand for USB ADSL products," said Eric Schutz, vice president of business development for Alcatel's microelectronics group.

Alcatel's two-chip DMT solution has the lowest power consumption on the market, much lower than the USB 1.1 spec, and has the lowest overall BOM cost due to fewer chips and discrete/active components. The MTK-20152 product is also Annex A and B compatible.

"Our USB 1.1 solution addresses CPE (Customer Premise Equipment) ADSL modem manufacturers' needs for reduced board space, increased power savings and reduced design cycle time and can easily be modified to deal with different electrical requirements," said Dominique Dumortier, ON Semiconductor analog division director in Europe.

"Our parts enable the modem to signal power-down to the Central Office, reducing the cost of remote diagnostics."

According to Dataquest Telecom Group's Worldwide xDSL Market Share and Forecast, 2001 (6/25/01), "The market for ADSL is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.1 percent between 2001 and 2005 to more than 25 million of CPE units shipped."

To deliver this system-level solution, ON Semiconductor provides more than 10 different devices including the company's CS51413 low-voltage buck regulator that uses V2(TM) architecture to deliver ultra-fast transient response, improved regulation and simplified design.

The solution also includes the CS5173 switching regulator and the NCP511 low-dropout linear regulator designed for handheld-communication equipment and portable battery-powered applications that require low-quiescent current.

To close the design, the solution includes the company's MiniGate Logic(TM) products in the space-saving SOT-353 package and Schottky power rectifier and ultra-low RDS(on) p-channel MOSFET products. For more information about these semiconductors, please visit http://onsemi.com/powermanagement.
