New 0.35micron Chip Technology is First to Provide 80V Functionality

Combined With Higher Digital Integration

Alcatel (NYSE:ALA) (Paris:CGEP) today announced the launch of I3T, a new-generation technology that combines mixed-signal (analog/digital), high-voltage functionality (up to 80V), complex digital circuitry and an embedded microcontroller (ARM family) on one single chip.

As a result, customers benefit from improved system integration at lower cost and smaller dimensions.

"This new technology represents a tremendous step forward for automotive and computer peripheral applications. Alcatel has a strong expertise in IC design for both high-voltage, mixed-signal components, and in high-complexity digital products. By combining both, we have leveraged this knowledge to develop our innovative I3T technology," says Tony Denayer, Alcatel's General Manager, Automotive & Peripherals. "The I3T-based circuits will fit the requirements of the new 42V battery concept perfectly. I3T will be incorporated in automotive equipment for powertrain, body and safety applications, as well as motor and head drivers for the printer market."

The I3T technology succeeds Alcatel's highly successful I2T family, and is based on 0.35micron (while the I2T was based on a 0.7micron mixed-mode CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  technology). Today, I2T is used in automotive and computer peripheral applications with limited embedded digital functionality (30K gates). Both technologies fit the new 42V standard.

I3T is modular, and comes in several versions. Starting with an 80V edition available in first-quarter 2002, new I3T modules with optimized devices will be released six months later. The new technology will be made available in Alcatel's world-renowned range of mixed-signal technologies for ASICs (application specific integrated circuits Integrated circuits

I3T-based circuits can incorporate 32-bit microcontroller memories, bus protocol controllers, I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

features, together with high- voltage circuitry like motor controllers. The primary features of this new I3T technology include:
-- Higher gate density (up to 15K gates/mm2) with low power consumption

-- Embedded flash, dense ROM, RAM and OTP

-- Improved HV DMOS switches with lower on-resistances (80 milliOhms/mm2 @ 40V,
130 milliOhms/mm2 @ 60V, 160 milliOhms/mm2 @ 80V)

-- Embedded complex IP blocks (USB, CAN/LIN controllers, ...)

-- Embedded microcontroller core: ARM

-- High-precision analog capabilities

-- More dense high-precision analog circuitry
