Alcatel Launches 2-chip DynaMiTe ADSL Modem Solution.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 1998--Alcatel today announced its 2-chip Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (communications, protocol) Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line - (ADSL, or Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Loop) A form of Digital Subscriber Line in which the bandwidth available for downstream connection is significantly larger then for upstream.  (ADSL See DSL.

) modem kit, the MTK-20140 ADSL DynaMiTe chipset at DSLcon '98 Fall.

Integrated processing and software control

The MTK-20140 is the fourth generation of the DynaMiTe chipset and brings Alcatel market-leading ADSL solution down to 2-chips. This includes the analog front-end (AFE (Apple File Exchange) An earlier Macintosh utility that converted data files between Mac and PC formats. It also included a file translator between IBM's DCA format and MacWrite. ) chip (MTC-20144) and a digital chip (MTC-20146) integrating all the DMT See DSL.  and ATM functions and the embedded controller. This makes DynaMiTe a totally self-contained ADSL solution.

DynaMiTe is fully ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC.  Issue 2 compliant and features:

- Direct ATM support (UTOPIA interface)

- Full software configuration and control

- Robust broadband connectivity up to 26 Kfeet on 24 AWG (American Wiring Gauge) A U.S. measurement standard of the diameter of non-ferrous wire, which includes copper and aluminum. In general, the thicker the wire, the greater the current-carrying capacity and the longer the distance it can span. , 18

- Full-rate ADSL transfer of up to 8 mb/s down and 850

kbps up (on 26 AWG)

- Software extensions to G.Lite and G.DMT, including ISDN ISDN

The complete package

The "packaged modem" approach adopted by Alcatel gives clients a total solution for ADSL. The DynaMiTe development kit includes the chipset, evaluation boards for both Central Office (CO) and Client Premises Equipment (CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Communications equipment that resides on the customer's premises.

) modems, as well as reference designs, full documentation, test and verification tools including Alcatel's DeTonator software and full specifications.

The MTK-20140 is totally compatible with its three chip predecessor, the MTK-20131, thereby offering DynaMiTe customers the option to simply upgrade earlier designs, gaining board area without changing the interface or software.

Interoperability

"The DynaMiTe MTK-20140 is the most integrated, powerful and established ADSL technology on the market," commented Robert Bury, xDSL Product Manager at Alcatel Microelectronics. "We have a customer base spanning the CO, CPE and router segments and the new 2-chip set confirms our position as the world leader in ADSL and underlines our commitment to this market."

Alcatel is leading the ADSL interoperability testing effort through its active contribution to standards and specific interoperability programs with other silicon and systems manufacturers. With more than 25 DynaMiTe customers registered, Alcatel's technology also guarantees interoperability between key vendors in all segments of the industry.

Pricing and availability

Available in volume from December 1998 at $50, the 0.35 micron chipset is the most integrated on the market and has optimized the mix of hardware and software control and operation. The MTC-20144 is the analogue front end chip, while the MTC-20146 integrates the controller, DMT processor, control software, filters, FFT and ATM functions. The data terminates at UTOPIA level 1 or level 2 interfaces. Future revisions will terminate at USB USB
