Alcatel Announces Shipment of New Voice-over-DSL Reference Platform; New Voice and POTS Chipsets Integrated with ADSL Solution Through a Single Provider.

Business Editors & Technology Writers

TAMPA, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 2001

Alcatel (Nasdaq:ALA) today announced they have started shipping a new VoDSL Integrated Access Device An IAD is a customer premises device that provides access to wide area networks and the Internet. Specifically, it aggregates multiple channels of information including voice and data across a single shared access link to a carrier or service provider PoP (Point of Presence).  (IAD (Integrated Access Device) A device that multiplexes a variety of communications technologies in the customer's premises onto a single telephone line for transmission to the carrier. It also demultiplexes the incoming streams into their respective channels. ) to OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  customers worldwide.

The complete reference design, called the MTK-50090, provides a complete residential gateway solution, connecting ADSL See DSL.

to Ethernet and POTS. The Alcatel IAD contains the company's widely deployed ADSL Utopia chipset, a voice processor, and a POTS solution (see www.alcatel.com/microelectronics for the SHPOTS press release). Alcatel is the first company in the market to provide all of the elements from a single-source provider needed to build a complete product.

The MTK-50090 product supports four phone lines using Voice-over-IP or Voice-over-DSL standards. In addition, the Alcatel solution supports bridge and router configurations as well as encryption and firewall applications. Alcatel's solution is operating-system independent and features low-power, optimized interfaces, and is easily upgradeable.

"Voice-enabling our well-known DynaMiTe(TM) modem platform was the next logical step in the evolution of the product line. The next generation of modems will offer much more than fast, always-on data streams. The gateway will enable the home to be controlled through a central point, using many integrated technologies," said Leon Cloetens, Vice President and General Manager for Alcatel's microelectronics activities. "The resulting MTC-50090 is the first in a family of IAD products, which we anticipate will be warmly received by the industry."

Mike Wolf, Director of Networking Research, In-Stat, and author of the book "Speed! Understanding and Installing Home Networks," commented: "The residential IAD market is poised for rapid growth. By 2006, In-Stat estimates that the worldwide residential IAD and gateway market will be $3.8 billion. The functionality of Alcatel's VoDSL IAD platform will fill an important need for CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Communications equipment that resides on the customer's premises.

Country-dependent requirements are all software configurable, making Alcatel the first to offload such functions into the POTS interface. This architecture allows the realization of multiple analog telephone interfaces in a very small PCB PCB: see polychlorinated biphenyl.
